Tides
Earth experiences tides because of the moon's gravity. Even though the moon is much smaller than the sun, the moon is much closer to Earth than the sun. The moon's distance to Earth gives it the ability to pull water toward it. Earth gets 2 low tides and 2 high tides a day because of the following motions: the moon revolves and the Earth rotates.
Spring tides are more extreme- very high tide and very low tides. Sun and moon are in line with Earth so they multiply the effect.
Neap tides are less extreme- sun and moon are at right angles to Earth so each body's pull cancels the other out
